Turnitin Submission Checklist

Turnitin Submission Checklist

If you are having trouble submitting, read through this list and make sure that you have followed each step.

  • Have you read the Assignment Brief?
Ensure that you are submitting to the correct submission area (correct unit, course and year of study) and that you are submitting before the due date.
  • Is the file the correct format? Please check the details provided in the assignment and submission point summary to confirm the file format that you should submit. Most submissions will require the format to be Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx) or PDF (.pdf).
Unless, specifically advised in the instructions DO NOT use Apple Pages files as Turnitin will not accept this file format.
  • Is the file smaller than the maximum 100mb?If your file is too large, the easiest way to make it smaller without reducing the quality of any embedded images is to first save it as a PDF. If after changing it to PDF it’s still too big, please read this guidance for more help to shrink the file.
  • Are you using a supported internet browser on a stable connection?
We recommend using Chrome or Safari and not Internet Explorer.
Be aware that if your file is very large it will take a long time to upload or may fail before completion if you are using a slow or unreliable internet connection. If this happens you will need to move to a more reliable connection in order to submit.
  • Does your file contain selectable text?
Unless the Turnitin submission point has been set up to accept any file, your file must contain at least 20 words of “selectable” text. To test that your text is “selectable”, save your file as a PDF. Open the PDF file and see if you can select words by clicking and dragging over the text. If you can select words, copy them and paste them into another document then your document is okay. Be warned, software such as Photoshop or Illustrator may save PDF files as a series of images which is not suitable for uploading to Turnitin. If the text has been embedded in an image and is not “selectable”, Turnitin will not be able to “read” the text and produce an originality report.

If your submission contains less than 20 words of text, you will see this error and the status of your submission will show as ‘Submit to Feedback Studio (Turnitin). For help, see our guidance on adding text to a PDF.
